Lors de son homélie pour la canonisation de quatre religieuses ce dimanche matin place Saint-Pierre, le Pape a invité à suivre « l’exemple lumineux » des quatre nouvelles saintes, et à devenir « des témoins de la résurrection de Jésus », « demeurer en Dieu et en son amour, pour annoncer avec les paroles et avec la vie la résurrection de Jésus, en témoignant l’unité entre nous et l’amour envers tous ». Comme les apôtres, il faut « comprendre que la mission d’annoncer le Christ ressuscité n’est pas une tâche individuelle : elle est à vivre de manière communautaire, avec le collège apostolique et la communauté ». Ainsi, tout chrétien se situe dans la lignée des douze apôtres, « témoins oculaires de la résurrection », en liant notre foi à leur témoignage « comme à une chaîne ininterrompue déployée au cours des siècles, non seulement par les successeurs des Apôtres, mais par des générations et générations de chrétiens ».

Pour y parvenir, « il faut demeurer dans le Christ ressuscité et dans son amour » conseille le Pape, rappelant la Première Lettre de Jean (4, 16). « Demeurer dans le Christ est le secret des saints » selon lui. L’amour comme fruit, c’est le témoignage donné par la Française Jeanne-Emilie de Villeneuve « qui a consacré sa vie à Dieu et aux pauvres, aux malades, aux prisonniers, aux exploités, devenant pour eux et pour tous signe concret de la miséricorde de Dieu, a relevé François. Cette relation avec Jésus est "l’atmosphère" dans laquelle vit le chrétien et dans laquelle il trouve la force de rester fidèle à l’Évangile » même devant les obstacles et les difficultés.

« Demeurer dans l’amour » : Sœur Maria Cristina Brando l’a fait également selon le Pape. « Elle a été complètement conquise par l’amour brulant pour le Seigneur ; et, de la prière, de la rencontre cœur à cœur avec Jésus ressuscité, présent dans l’Eucharistie, elle recevait la force de supporter les souffrances et de se donner comme pain rompu à beaucoup de personnes loin de Dieu et affamées d’amour authentique » a-t-il dit.

De ce témoignage à rendre à Jésus, il ne faut pas oublier un aspect essentiel selon François : « l’unité entre nous, ses disciples, à l’image de celle qui subsiste entre Lui et le Père ». L’amour du Père appelle également « à cultiver la prière contemplative », comme l’a fait Sœur Marie Baouardy. « Illettrée, elle a su donner des conseils et des explications théologiques avec une grande clarté, fruit du dialogue continuel avec le Saint Esprit » a estimé François. Une « docilité à l’Esprit Saint » qui lui a également permis de devenir « un instrument de rencontre et de communion avec le monde musulman ».

Suivre les traces de ces quatre modèles de sainteté
Enfin, le Pape n’a pas oublié la figure de Sœur Marie Alphonsine Danil Ghattas, qui nous a offert « un exemple clair de l’importance de nous rendre responsables les uns des autres, de vivre l’un au service de l’autre » car elle avait bien compris « ce que signifie irradier l’amour de Dieu dans l’apostolat, en devenant témoin de douceur et d’unité ».

A l’image de ces quatre nouvelles saintes, le Pape a invité chacun à se demander concrètement comment il est témoin du Christ ressuscité aujourd’hui : « suis-je capable de "semer" en famille, dans le milieu de travail, dans ma communauté, la semence de cette unité qu’il nous a donnée ? » a-t-il lancé à la foule de fidèles place Saint-Pierre. La réponse est dans le chemin emprunté par ces « quatre femmes, modèles de sainteté » dont le Pape nous invite à suivre « les traces ».

The Acts of the Apostles have set before us the early Church as she elects the man whom God called to take the place of Judas in the college of the Apostles. It is has to do not with a job, but with service. Indeed, Matthias, on whom the choice falls, receives a mission which Peter defines in these words: “One of these men... must become a witness with us to his resurrection”, the resurrection of Christ (Acts 1:21-23). In this way Peter sums up what it means to be part of the Twelve: it means to be a witness to Jesus’ resurrection. The fact that he says “with us” brings us to realize that the mission of proclaiming the risen Christ is not an individual undertaking: it is to be carried out in common, with the apostolic college and with the community. The Apostles had a direct and overwhelming experience of the resurrection; they were eyewitnesses to that event. Thanks to their authoritative testimony, many people came to believe; from faith in the risen Lord, Christian communities were born and are born continually. We too, today, base our faith in the risen Lord on the witness of the Apostles, which has come down to us through the mission of the Church. Our faith is firmly linked to their testimony, as to an unbroken chain which spans the centuries, made up not only by the successors of the Apostles, but also by succeeding generations of Christians. Like the Apostles, each one of Christ’s followers is called to become a witness to his resurrection, above all in those human settings where forgetfulness of God and human disorientation are most evident.

If this is to happen, we need to remain in the risen Christ and in his love, as the First Letter of Saint John has reminded us: “He who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 Jn 4:16). Jesus had repeated insistently to his disciples: “Abide in me… Abide in my love” (Jn 15:4, 9). This is the secret of the saints: abiding in Christ, joined to him like branches to the vine, in order to bear much fruit (cf. Jn 15:1-8). And this fruit is none other than love. This love shines forth in the testimony of Sister Jeanne Émilie de Villeneuve, who consecrated her life to God and to the poor, the sick, the imprisoned and the exploited, becoming for them and for all a concrete sign of the Lord’s merciful love.

A relationship with the risen Jesus is the “atmosphere” in which Christians live, and in which they find the strength to remain faithful to the Gospel, even amid obstacles and misunderstandings.  “Abiding in love”: this is what Sister Maria Cristina Brando also did. She was completely given over to ardent love for the Lord. From prayer and her intimate encounter with the risen Jesus present in the Eucharist, she received strength to endure suffering and to give herself, as bread which is broken, to many people who had wandered far from God and yet hungered for authentic love.

An essential aspect of witness to the risen Lord is unity among ourselves, his disciples, in the image of his own unity with the Father. Today too, in the Gospel, we heard Jesus’ prayer on the eve of his passion: “that they may be one, even as we are one” (Jn 17:11). From this eternal love between the Father and the Son, poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (cf. Rom 5:5), our mission and our fraternal communion draw strength; this love is the ever-flowing source of our joy in following the Lord along the path of his poverty, his virginity and his obedience; and this same love calls us to cultivate contemplative prayer. Sister Mariam Baouardy experienced this in an outstanding way. Poor and uneducated, she was able to counsel others and provide theological explanations with extreme clarity, the fruit of her constant converse with the Holy Spirit. Her docility to the Spirit also made her a means of encounter and fellowship with the Muslim world. So too, Sister Marie Alphonsine Danil Ghattas came to understand clearly what it means to radiate the love of God in the apostolate, and to be a witness to meekness and unity. She shows us the importance of becoming responsible for one another, of living lives of service one to another.

To abide in God and in his love, and thus to proclaim by our words and our lives the resurrection of Jesus, to live in unity with one another and with charity towards all. This is what the four women Saints canonized today did. Their luminous example challenges us in our lives as Christians. How do I bear witness to the risen Christ? How do I abide in him? How do I remain in his love? Am I capable of “sowing” in my family, in my workplace and in my community, the seed of that unity which he has bestowed on us by giving us a share in the life of the Trinity?

When we return home, let us take with us the joy of this encounter with the risen Lord. Let us cultivate in our hearts the commitment to abide in God’s love. Let us remain united to him and among ourselves, and follow in the footsteps of these four women, models of sanctity whom the Church invites us to imitate.

Così, in sintesi, il Papa, nella Solennità dell’Ascensione, durante la Messa per la proclamazione di quattro nuove sante: la religiosa francese Giovanna Emilia De Villeneuve, le due suore palestinesi Maria Alfonsina Danil Ghattas e Maria di Gesù Crocifisso e la religiosa napoletana Maria Cristina Brando. In questo giorno di festa per la Chiesa universale Francesco ha sottolineato, davanti ad una Piazza San Pietro gremita di fedeli, che l’esempio luminoso dei santi “interpella” tutti ad essere testimoni di Cristo. Sono arrivati dal Medio Oriente oltre duemila cristiani. In Piazza San Pietro anche il presidente palestinese, Mahmoud Abbas, il patriarca latino di Gerusalemme, Fouad Twal, e una delegazione israeliana che il Papa ha salutato al termine della celebrazione. Carità verso tutti per testimoniare la Resurrezione di Cristo
Piazza San Pietro immersa nella luce della fede irradiata in ogni parte del mondo. Quattro nuove Sante - afferma Papa Francesco - indicano da oggi la via del cielo:

"Rimanere in Dio e nel suo amore, per annunciare con la parola e con la vita la risurrezione di Gesù, testimoniando l’unità fra di noi e la carità verso tutti. Questo hanno fatto le quattro sante oggi proclamate".

Fondiamo la nostra fede sulla testimonianza oculare degli Apostoli
Il Papa ha tracciato lo splendore della testimonianza dei santi, indicando il legame con Cristo che passa attraverso i secoli, il compito della Chiesa missionaria e l’esperienza “diretta e stupenda della Risurrezione” di Gesù che ebbero gli Apostoli, sulla cui testimonianza oculare fondiamo la nostra fede, e che interpella tutti:

"A imitazione degli Apostoli, infatti, ogni discepolo di Cristo è chiamato a diventare testimone della sua Risurrezione, soprattutto in quegli ambienti umani dove più forte è l’oblio di Dio e lo smarrimento dell’uomo".

Una testimonianza che chiama alla permanenza nell’amore di Cristo, e questo – ha evidenziato il Papa – è il “segreto dei santi: dimorare in Cristo, uniti a Lui come i tralci alla vite, per portare molto frutto”:

“E questo frutto non è altro che l’amore. Questo amore risplende nella testimonianza di suor Giovanna Emilia de Villeneuve, che ha consacrato la sua vita a Dio e ai poveri, ai malati, ai carcerati, agli sfruttati, diventando per essi e per tutti segno concreto dell’amore misericordioso del Signore”.

La relazione con Gesù Risorto – ha aggiunto - è l’atmosfera in cui vive il cristiano e nella quale trova la forza di restare fedele al Vangelo, anche in mezzo agli ostacoli e alle incomprensioni:

“Rimanere nell’amore: questo ha fatto anche suor Maria Cristina Brando. Ella fu completamente conquistata dall’amore ardente per il Signore; e dalla preghiera, dall’incontro cuore a cuore con Gesù risorto, presente nell’Eucaristia, e di lì riceveva la forza per sopportare le sofferenze e donarsi come pane spezzato a tante persone lontane da Dio e affamate di amore autentico".

“Un aspetto essenziale della testimonianza da rendere al Signore risorto è l’unità tra di noi, suoi discepoli - ha aggiunto Francesco – unità che è “immagine di quella che sussiste tra Lui e il Padre”. Ed è grazie all’azione dello Spirito Santo che “prendono forza la nostra missione e la nostra comunione fraterna”. “Da esso - ha suggerito -  scaturisce sempre nuovamente la gioia di seguire il Signore nella via della sua povertà, della sua verginità e della sua obbedienza; e quello stesso amore chiama a coltivare la preghiera contemplativa:

"Lo ha sperimentato in modo eminente suor Maria Baouardy che, umile e illetterata, seppe dare consigli e spiegazioni teologiche con estrema chiarezza, frutto del dialogo continuo con lo Spirito Santo. La docilità allo Spirito Santo l’ha resa anche strumento di incontro e di comunione con il mondo musulmano".

Così pure suor Maria Alfonsina Danil Ghattas ha ben compreso che cosa significa irradiare l’amore di Dio nell’apostolato, diventando testimone di mitezza e di unità:

"Ella ci offre un chiaro esempio di quanto sia importante renderci gli uni responsabili degli altri, di vivere l’uno al servizio dell’altro".

Come io sono testimone di Cristo risorto?
Un empio luminoso quello delle quattro nuove sante che interpella, però, anche la nostra vita cristiana invitandoci a “dimorare nell’amore di Dio”:

"Come io sono testimone di Cristo risorto? E' una domanda che dobbiamo farci ... Come rimango in Lui, come dimoro nel suo amore? Sono capace di “seminare” in famiglia, nell’ambiente di lavoro, nella mia comunità, il seme di quella unità che Lui ci ha donato partecipandola a noi dalla vita trinitaria?".

Appello alla riconciliazione e alla convivenza fraterna
Vibrante l'appello del Papa al Regina Coeli. Guardando alle quattro nuove sante e ai loro territori di origine ha esortato alla missionarietà, a non perdere la speranza, alla pace:

"Per loro intercessione, il Signore conceda un nuovo impulso missionario ai rispettivi Paesi di origine. Ispirandosi al loro esempio di misericordia, di carità e di riconciliazione, i cristiani di queste terre guardino con speranza al futuro, proseguendo nel cammino della solidarietà e della convivenza fraterna".

Los Hechos de los Apóstoles nos ha presentado a la Iglesia naciente en el momento en el cual, Dios llama a quien debe tomar el lugar de Judas en el colegio de los Apóstoles. No se trata de asumir un encargo, sino un servicio. De hecho es Matías, sobre quien recae la elección, recibe una misión que Pedro define así: «Es necesario que uno, junto a nosotros sea testigo de su resurrección» – de la resurrección de Cristo (Hech 1,21-22). Con estas palabras él resume que significa formar parte de los Doce: significa ser testimonio de la resurrección de Jesús. El hecho que diga “junto a nosotros” nos hace entender que la misión de anunciar a Cristo resucitado nos es una tarea individual: si no es para vivirlo de modo comunitario, con el colegio apostólico y con la comunidad. Los Apóstoles han tenido la experiencia directa y maravillosa de la resurrección; son testigos visibles de este evento. Gracias a la credibilidad de su testimonio, muchos han creído; y de la fe en Cristo resucitado han nacido y nacen continuamente las comunidades cristianas. También hoy, nosotros, fundamos nuestra fe en el Señor resucitado bajo el testimonio de los Apóstoles llegado hasta nosotros a través de la misión de la Iglesia. Nuestra fe está ligada fuertemente a su testimonio como a una cadena ininterrumpida y prolongada en el curso de los siglos no sólo por los sucesores de los Apóstoles, sino por generaciones y generaciones de cristianos. A imitación de los Apóstoles, de hecho, todo discípulo de Cristo está llamado a convertirse en testigo de su resurrección, sobre todo en los ambientes humanos donde es más fuerte el olvido de Dios y la perdición del hombre.

Para que esto se realice, es necesario permanecer en Cristo resucitado y en su amor, como nos recuerda la Primera Carta de Juan: «Quien permanece en el amor, permanece en Dios y Dios permanece en él» (1 Jn 4,16). Jesús lo había repetido con insistencia a sus discípulos: «Permanezcan en mí… Permanezcan en mi amor» había dicho (Jn 15,4.9). Este es el secreto de los santos: permanecer en Cristo, unidos a Él como los racimos a la vid, para dar muchos frutos (Cfr. Jn 15,1-8). Y este fruto nos otra cosa que el amor. Este amor resplandece en el testimonio de Sor Juana Emilia De Villeneuve, que consagró su vida a Dios y a los pobres, a los enfermos, a los encarcelados, a los explotados, haciéndose para ellos y para todos un signo concreto del amor misericordioso del Señor.

La relación con Jesús resucitado es – por así decir – la “atmósfera” en la cual vive el cristiano y en la cual encuentra la fuerza para permanecer fiel al Evangelio, también en medio de los obstáculos y la incomprensiones. “Permanecer en el amor”: esto también ha hecho Sor María Cristina Brando. Ella fue conquistada completamente por el ardiente amor por el Señor; y por la oración, del encuentro corazón a corazón con Jesús resucitado, presente en la Eucaristía, y de ahí recibía la fuerza para soportar los sufrimientos y donarse como pan compartido a tantas personas alejadas de Dios y hambrientas de un amor auténtico.

Un aspecto esencial del testimonio que tenemos que dar del Señor resucitado es la unidad entre nosotros, sus discípulos, y a imagen de aquella que subsiste entre Él y el Padre. Y resuena también hoy en el Evangelio la oración de Jesús en la vigilia de la pasión: «Sean una sola cosa, como nosotros» (Jn 17,11). De este amor eterno entre el Padre y el Hijo, que se infunde en nosotros por medio del Espíritu Santo (Cfr. Rom 5,5), toma fuerza nuestra misión y nuestra comunión fraterna; de ella emerge siempre nuevamente la alegría para seguir al Señor en el camino de la pobreza, de la virginidad y de la obediencia; y este mismo amor nos invita a cultivar la oración contemplativa. Lo ha experimentado en modo eminente Sor María Baouardy, humilde e iletrada, supo dar consejos y explicaciones teológicas con extrema claridad, fruto del diálogo continuo con el Espíritu Santo. La docilidad al Espíritu Santo también la ha hecho un instrumento para el encuentro y la comunión con el mundo musulmán. Así como también Sor María Alfonsina Danil ha entendido que cosa significa irradiar el amor de Dios en el apostolado, convirtiéndose en testimonio de mansedumbre y unidad. Ella nos ofrece un claro ejemplo de cuanto sea importante hacernos responsables los unos de los otros, de vivir uno al servicio del otro.

Permanecer en Dios y en su amor, para anunciar con la palabra y con la vida la resurrección de Jesús, testimoniando la unidad entre nosotros y la caridad hacia los demás. Esto es lo que han hecho las cuatro Santas proclamadas hoy. Su ejemplo luminoso también interpela nuestra vida cristiana: ¿Como soy testimonio de Cristo resucitado? Es una pregunta que debemos hacernos ¿Cómo permanezco en el Él, cómo vivo en su amor? ¿Soy capaz de sembrar en familia, en el trabajo, en mi comunidad, la semilla de aquella unidad que Él nos ha donado haciéndonosla participe de la vida trinitaria?

Regresando hoy a casa, llevemos con nosotros la alegría de este encuentro con el Señor resucitado, cultivemos en el corazón el compromiso de vivir en el amor de Dios, permaneciendo unidos a Él y entre nosotros, y siguiendo las huellas de estas cuatro mujeres, modelos de santidad, que la Iglesia nos invita imitar.
