The Discalced Carmelites of Bethlehem

Mariam of  Jesus  Crucified
(Mariam  Baouardy).

17 May 2015

Introduction

The  documents  which  are  reproduced  here  are  held  in  the  part  of  the  archives  of  the  Carmelite  convent  in  Bethlehem  which  are  about  Sister  Mariam  of  Jesus  Crucified  (Mariam Baouardy).  She  has  today  been  proclaimed  a  saint  by  the  universal  church.  These few written testimonies are rare and hence very precious, considering how little ability Mariam had as a writer, being almost illiterate.

The  story  of  how  these  documents  were  preserved  has  been  turbulent  and  confused.  The  Carmelite  nuns  in  Bethlehem  have  always  tried  to  protect  them  jealously.  But  regrettably  they  have  failed  for  three  reasons:
1)  firstly,  owing  to  the  paper.  In  fact  it  was  often  low  quality  scrap  paper  and  therefore  subject  to  natural  deterioration  owing  to  the  passage  of  time.
2)  second  was  the  inappropriate  places  in  which  the  documents  were  sometimes  preserved.  With  the  aim  of  preserving  the  precious  material  from  being  destroyed  during  various  wars  in  which  these  territories  were  involved,  the  nuns  kept  them  inside  the  sepulchers  intended  for  members  of  the  community,  in  the  monastery  church  crypt.  Hence  the  documents  were  subjected  to  a  very  high  level  of  humidity  which  caused  mould  and  flaking.
3)  the  third  reason  was  the  way  in  which  the  documents  were  preserved.  They  were  placed  in  plastic  bags,  with  the  idea  of  protecting  them  better.  In  this  way,  the  spread  of  mould  was  favored;  at  the  same  time  the  paper  was  prevented  from  breathing.

The preservation of these documents is a turbulent history. The nuns of the Carmelite Convent of Bethlehem have tried always to zealously protect  them, but unfortunately they failed in their objective for three reasons: the first reason was due to the paper. In fact it was a question of scrapes of paper, often of poor quality, hence subject to natural deterioration with the passing of time. The second reason the inadequate preservation due to contingent circumstances. In order to protect this precious material from destruction, during different wars in which this land has been involved, the nuns put them in the niches destined for the burial of the members of the community in the crypt of the Church of the monastery. Thus these documents were submitted to very high levels of humidity which caused mould and flaking. The third reason was the way the documents were preserved. They were placed in plastic bags thinking to preserve them better. This favored the spread of mould and at the same time impeded the paper from breathing.

In December 1996 a young married couple from Sicily, friends of the Prioress, who at that time was Mother St. Joseph of the Immaculate Heart, went on pilgrimage to Bethlehem to give thanks both to Jesus for the birth of their son and to Mariam whose intercession they had invoked to obtain this grace. When they saw the manuscript material of the Blessed Mariam, they were aware of its serious state of deterioration and they made clear to the  Prioress the urgent necessity to restore it before it would be too late and thus avoid the risk of losing it forever. The Prioress, taking into account their experience and their great devotion to Mariam, gave them the documentation. They took it to Sicily in order to restore it. This couple was close friend of the Bishop Sotir Ferrara, Eparch of Piana degli Albanesi, and in the Eparchy in Mezzojuso (PA) there were Basilian Fathers, who were excellent restorers of paper material. Thus the material was confided to them for its restoration. The monks with their capacity and skill, did their work excellently, and definitively saved the precious material.

The  entire  body  of  material  can  be  divided  into  six  sections,  with  an  appendix.
1 ) Exercises  in  writing
2 ) Thoughts
3 ) Prayers
4 ) writings  to  the  Sisters
5 ) pictures and images
6 ) religious profession
7 ) appendix
In  the  first  section,  there  are  various  writing  exercises.  Mariam  was  illiterate  when  she  entered  the  Carmelite  house  in  Pau.  The  nuns  tried  very  hard  to  teach  her  to  read  and  write.  This  was  with  the  aim  that  Mariam  be  able  to  be  part  of  the  nun’s  choir,  for  the  reciting  of  divine  office,  but  all  their  efforts  failed.  In  fact,  she  was  only  ever  able  to  write  a  few  lines  with  great  effort;  she  did  so  very  badly  (even  from  a  graphic  point  of  view)  and  with  great  difficulty.  These  lines  were  writing  exercises  which  ranged  from  consonants  to  vowels  and  some  words.  The  nuns  made  her  copy  out  these  exercises  repeatedly,  whether  it  was  her  signature  or  the  words  of  her  religious  profession.

The  second  section  includes  notes  given  to  the  Sisters  on  special  occasions.  These  contain  thoughts  and  reflections,  which  she  wanted  to  put  to  them,  in  order  to  draw  their  attention  and  inspire  their  fervor  for  an  ever  holier  life.

The  third  section  gathers  together  the  prayers  written  on  simple  scraps  of  paper  or  on  the  back  of  some holy card.  Mariam  loved  writing  down and handing on  the  prayer  to  the  Holy  Spirit  which  she  had  been  taught  during  an ecstasy or  other  individual  prayers.  She  loved  to  give  these  to  the  Sisters,  or  to  her  spiritual  director,  or  other  people  close  to  her.

The  theme  of  the  fourth  section  is  Mariam’s  writings  for  the  Sisters.  Often  the  only  part  we  find  written  in  Mariam’s  hand  is  the  beginning  and  the  signature  on  the  note;  the  rest  of  the  message  was  dictated  and  written  down  by  one  of  the  Sisters  who  carried  out  the  role  of  secretary,  because  of  the  difficulty  the  saint  had  in  writing.

In  the  fifth  section  are  the  pious  images.  They  are  almost  always  printed  on  the  front  side,  and  on  the  back  is  written  a  thought  or  a  prayer.  There  are  other  images  she  made  herself  in  the  local  tradition  of  floral  compositions,  using  flowers  she  herself  gathered,  dried  and  prepared,  in  memory  of  the  Holy  Places,  and  especially  Bethlehem.

The  sixth  section  includes  the  final  copy  of  her  religious  profession,  drawn  up  after  repeated  attempts  to  write  it.

The  reply  by  Cardinal  Giovanni  Simeoni,  Prefect  of  the  Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith  has  been  deliberately  added  as  an  appendix.  He  wrote  to  Mariam  thinking  she  was  the  Mother  Prioress  of  the  Carmelite  priory  of  Bethlehem.  This  was  in  reply  to  the  letter  Sister  Mariam  had  sent  to  the  Pope  asking  authorization  to  found  a  house  of  the  Congregation  of  the  Fathers  of  Betharram.  Such  a  document  is  extremely  valuable  for  the  history  of  the  Carmelite  priory  of  Bethlehem.  Furthermore  it  shows  Mariam’s  simplicity  of  heart  and  her  saintly  courage  in  writing  to  the  Pope  himself  concerning  matters  which  were  particularly  important  to  her,  and  about  which  she  was  inspired  by  God.

We  cannot  end  this  message  without  a  word  of  thanks  for  those  who,  out  of  love  and  devotion  to  Saint  Mariam  of  Jesus  Crucified,  have  made  it  possible  for  this  precious  heritage,  (which  was  heading  towards  certain  destruction),  to  come  down  to  us  and  made  it  possible  for  it  to  be  passed  on  to  future  generations.

Presentazione

 LIBRO PARA EL PAPA

A Su Santidad Francisco
